Introduction:

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the energy currency of life. It is a high energy molecule present in every cell. It helps to store and pass the energy needed for the life processes. Glycolysis (breakdown of glucose) is a pathway which does not need oxygen. When there is the absence of oxygen then certain eukaryotic organisms along with certain cells (like mammalian skeletal muscles cells during continued contraction) can lead to the production of a reduced quantity of ATP molecules by glycolysis (fermentation).
