Normal hatchery processes in aquaculture inevitably produce stress in fish, which may negatively impact growth, reproduction, flesh quality, and susceptibility to disease. Such stress manifests itself in elevated and sustained corticosteroid levels. The article “Evaluation of Simple Instruments for the Measurement of Blood Glucose and Lactate, and Plasma Protein as Stress Indicators in Fish” (J. of the World Aquaculture Society, 1999: 276–284) described an experiment in which fish were subjected to a stress protocol and then removed and tested at various times after the protocol had been applied. The accompanying data on x = time (min) and y = blood glucose level (mmol/L) was read from a plot.
x | 2 | 2 | 5 | 7 | 12 | 13 | 17 | 18 | 23 | 24 | 26 | 28 |
y | 4.0 | 3.6 | 3.7 | 4.0 | 3.8 | 4.0 | 5.1 | 3.9 | 4.4 | 4.3 | 4.3 | 4.4 |
x | 29 | 30 | 34 | 36 | 40 | 41 | 44 | 56 | 56 | 57 | 60 | 60 |
y | 5.8 | 4.3 | 5.5 | 5.6 | 5.1 | 5.7 | 6.1 | 5.1 | 5.9 | 6.8 | 4.9 | 5.7 |
Use the methods developed in this chapter to analyze the data, and write a brief report summarizing your conclusions (assume that the investigators are particularly interested in glucose level 30 min after stress).

Cadmium, a heavy metal, is toxic to animals. Mushrooms, however, are able to absorb and accumulate cadmium at high concentrations. The Czech and Slovak governments have set a safety limit for cadmium in dry vegetables at 0.5 part per million (ppm). M. Melgar et al. measured the cadmium levels in a random sample of the edible mushroom Boletus pinicola and published the results in the paper “Influence of Some Factors in Toxicity and Accumulation of Cd from Edible Wild Macrofungi in NW Spain” (Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Vol. B33(4), pp. 439–455). A hypothesis test is to be performed to decide whether the mean cadmium level in Boletus pinicola mushrooms is greater than the government’s recommended limit. a. determine the null hypothesis. b. determine the alternative hypothesis. c. classify the hypothesis test as two tailed, left tailed, or right tailed.arrow_forward
- Grey-Seal Nursing. Grey seals are one of several types of earless seals. The length of time that a female grey seal nurses her pup is studied by S. Twiss et al. in the article “Variation in Female Grey Seal (Halichoerus grypus) Reproductive Performance Correlates to Proactive-Reactive Behavioural Types” (PLOS ONE 7(11): e49598. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0049598). The average lactation (nursing) period of all earless seals is 23 days. A hypothesis test is to be performed to decide whether the mean lactation period of grey seals differs from 23 days. a. determine the null hypothesis. b. determine the alternative hypothesis. c. classify the hypothesis test as two tailed, left tailed, or right tailed.arrow_forwardWhat is the observational study design used in the study Background: Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent among Indian women. Subclinical vitamin D deficiency is a significant risk factor for osteopenia and fractures. However, its effect on bone metabolism and bone mineral density (BMD) is still debatable. Objectives: This study aimed to determine relationships of the vitamin D status with bone turnover markers, carboxy-terminal telopeptide of type-I collagen (CTX), N-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen (PINP), and BMD in healthy Indian women. Methods: In this study, we determined serum levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D), parathyroid hormone, serum CTX, and PINP using commercial ELISA kits in 310 healthy Indian women aged 25 - 65 years who underwent BMD measurements with DXA scan. Results: The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was 53.87%. A direct correlation of BMD with vitamin D levels was not observed. PINP negatively correlated with vitamin D in both premenopausal…arrow_forwardPassive exposure to environmental tobacco smoke has been associated with growth suppression and an increased frequency of respiratory tract infections in normal children. Is this association more pronounced in children with cystic fibrosis? To answer this question, 43 children (18 girls and 25 boys) attending a 2-week summer camp for cystic fibrosis patients were studied (New England Journal of Medicine, Sept. 20, 1990). Among several variables measured were the child's weight percentile (y) and the number of cigarettes smoked per day in the child's home (x). a. For the 18 girls, the coefficient of correlation between y and x was reported as r = –.50. Interpret - this result. b. Refer to part a. - Recycling newsprint is important in reducing waste. The article "The Influence of Newspaper Aging on Optical Properties of its De-inked Pulp" (M. Rahmaninia, A. Latibari, et al., Turkish J Eng Env Sci, 2008:35-39) presents the results of an experiment to determine the effects of the age of newsprint on the brightness (in percent) of the recycled paper. Four aging periods were considered, along with five concentrations of sodium hydroxide (NaOH), used to de-ink the paper. The effect of the sodium hydroxide concentration is not of interest. The results are presented in the following table. NaOH Concentration Age (Months) 2% 0% 0.5% 1% 1.5% 54.6 54.3 55.5 56.3 56.6 4 45.6 44.1 43.7 45.6 47.1 46.1 45.9 46.4 45.0 47.9 12 44.0 44.1 45.2 43.7 46.5 a. Zajdlik, et al., Journal of Great Lakes Research, 2016:223–232) presents measurements of arsenic concentrations in fish found in Northern Canada. In a sample of 8 whitefish caught in Yellowknife Bay, the mean arsenic concentration in the liver was 0.32 mg/kg, with a standard deviation of 0.05 mg/kg. Can you conclude that the mean arsenic concentration in whitefish in Yellowknife Bay is greater than 0.3 mg/kg?arrow_forward10.50 Recess and Wasted Food. E. Bergman et al. conducted a study to determine, among other things, the impact that scheduling recess before or after the lunch period has on wasted food for students in grades three through five. Results were published in the online article “The Relationship of Meal and Recess Schedules to Plate Waste in Elementary Schools” (Journal of Child Nutrition and Management, Vol. 28, Issue 2). Summary statistics for the amount of food wasted, in grams, by randomly selected students are presented in the following table. Lunch before recess Lunch after recess ¯ x1 = 223.1 ¯ x2 = 156.6 s1 = 122.9 s2 = 108.1 n1 = 889 n2 = 1119 At the 1% significance level, do the data provide sufficient evidence to conclude that, in grades three through five, the mean amount of food wasted for lunches before recess exceeds that for lunches after recess?arrow_forward
- The article "Determination of Carboxyhemoglobin Levels and Health Effects on Officers Working at the Istanbul Bosphorus Bridge" (G. Kocasoy and H.
