State casket sales restrictions. Some states permit only licensed firms to sell funeral goods (e.g., caskets, urns) to the consumer, while other states have no restrictions. States with casket sales restrictions are being challenged in court to lift these monopolistic restrictions. A paper in the Journal of Law and Economics (February 2008) used multiple regression to investigate the impact of lifting casket sales restrictions on the cost of a funeral. Data collected for a sample of 1,437 funerals were used to fit the model. A simpler version of the model estimated by the researchers is E (y) = β0+ β1x1+ β2x2+ β3 x1 x2, where y is the price (in dollars) of a direct burial, x1 = {1 if funeral home is in a restricted state. 0 if not}, and x2 = {1 if price includes a basic wooden casket. 0 if no casket}. The estimated equation (with standard errors in parentheses) is
- a. Calculate the predicted price of a direct burial with a basic wooden casket at a funeral home in a restricted state.
- b. The data include a direct burial funeral with a basic wooden casket at a funeral home in a restricted state that costs $2,200. Assuming the standard deviation of the model is $50. is this data value an outlier?
- c. The data also include a direct burial funeral with a basic wooden casket at a funeral home in a restricted state that costs $2,500. Again, assume that the standard deviation of the model is $50. Is this data value an outlier?

- The controller of Chittenango Chain Company believes that the identification of the variable and fixed components of the firm’s costs will enable the firm to make better planning and control decisions. Among the costs the controller is concerned about is the behavior of indirect-materials cost. She believes there is a correlation between machine hours and the amount of indirect materials used.A member of the controller’s staff has suggested that least-squares regression be used to determine the cost behavior of indirect materials. The regression equation shown below was developed from 40 pairs of observations.S = $200 + $9H where S = Total monthly cost of indirect materials H = Machine hours per month The estimated cost of indirect materials if 900 machine hours are to be used during a month is $8,300 (Assume that 900 falls within the relevant range for this cost equation.) - We are interested in analysing the effect of the lockout laws introduced in some areas of the Sydney CBD and nearby surrounds on the number of alcohol-related violent incidents. Suppose we have two samples of data on the number of violent incidents in a number of local areas of the Sydney CBD and nearby surrounds. Pubs, hotels and clubs located in a subset of these areas became subject to the lockout laws when they were introduced in 2014. The first sample is from 2010 before the introduction of the lockout laws, and the second is from 2015 after the introduction of the law. The hypothesis we wish to test is that the introduction of the lockout laws reduces violent incidents in the areas in which the lockout laws were put in place. We use a difference-in-difference model on the pooled data from 2010 and 2015. We find the following results: viol_inc hat = 33.21 (5.29) + 12.43lockout (7.01) – 4.19Yr2015 (2.98) – 3.32 (lockout x Yr2015) (1.85) N = 181, R^2 = 0.128 Where: viol_incis the…arrow_forwardSuppose you examined blood of 36 patients with the aim to study the relation between sugar level in blood (in mg/dL) and the amount of artificial sweetener (measured in grams).
