Chapter 13, Problem 13.140CP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Mycobacterium avium, a human pathogen responsible for respiratory infections, sometimes found in hot tubs can be inactivated by many disinfectants including chlorine, chlorine dioxide and ozone.

Concept introduction:

  • Mycobacterium avium are resistant to chlorine, chlorine dioxide, and ozone.
  • Chlorine susceptibility of cells was the same in washed cultures containing aggregates and in reduced aggregate fractions lacking aggregates. Cells of the more slowly growing strains were more resistant to chlorine than the cells of the more rapidly growing strains.
  • Activation energy may also be defined as the minimum extra amount of energy absorbed by the reactant molecules so that their energy becomes equal to threshold value.

To determine:

The activation energy (in kJ) required for the inactivation of M. avium by chlorine dioxide.
