Concept explainers
An object is released from rest at an altitude h above the surface of the Earth. (a) Show that its speed at a distance r from the Earth’s center, where RE ≤ r ≤ RE + h, is
(b) Assume the release altitude is 500 km. Perform the integral
to find the time of fall as the object moves from the release point to the Earth’s surface. The negative sign appears because the object is moving opposite to the radial direction, so its speed is v = −dr/dt. Perform the integral numerically.

- On Mars, a ball is rolling from a ground to a hill, and we know the height of the hill, Z, is 10 m, and the initial velocity ofthe ball on the ground and the final velocity on the hill are known: V1 = 20 m/s and V2 = 10 m/s, respectively. The mass ofthe ball, m, is 4 kg. The gravitational acceleration on Mars, gMars, is 3.7 m/s2. Please calculate 1) the change in kineticenergy, ΔKE, in J and 2) the change in potential energy, ΔPE, in J, of the ball for the rolling process.arrow_forwardA meteoroid is moving towards a planet.
