The three possible
Concept Introduction:
Organic compounds are represented shortly by the molecular formula and structural formula. Each and every compound has its own molecular formula. Compounds can have same molecular formula but not same structural formula.
Isomers are the compounds that have same molecular formula but different structural formula. The main difference lies in the way the atoms are arranged in the structure. Isomers have different chemical and physical properties even when they have same molecular formula. This is known as Isomerism.
If there is difference only in the connectivity of the atoms in the molecule, then it is known as constitutional isomerism. The isomers are known as constitutional isomers. They will have same molecular formula and same functional group, but they differ in the connectivity between the atoms in the molecule.

- Name and draw structural formulas for all alkenes with the molecular formula C5H10. As you draw these alkenes, remember that cis and trans isomers are different compounds and must be counted separatelyarrow_forwardWhat is the difference in bonding and in general molecular formula between an alkene and a cycloalkane with the same number of carbon atoms?arrow_forwardDistinguish between isomerism and resonance. Distinguish between structural and geometric isomerism. When writing the various structural isomers, the most difficult task is identifying which are different isomers and which are identical to a previously written structurethat is, which are compounds that differ only by the rotation of a carbon single bond. How do you distinguish between structural isomers and those that are identical? Alkenes and cycloalkanes are structural isomers of each other. Give an example of each using C4H8. Another common feature of alkenes and cycloalkanes is that both have restricted rotation about one or more bonds in the compound, so both can exhibit cis- trans isomerism. What is required for an alkene or cycloalkane to exhibit cis-trans isomerism? Explain the difference between cis and trans isomers. Alcohols and ethers are structural isomers of each other, as are aldehydes and ketones. Give an example of each to illustrate. Which functional group in Table 21-4 can be structural isomers of carboxylic acids? What is optical isomerism? What do you look for to determine whether an organic compound exhibits optical isomerism? 1-Bromo-1-chloroethane is optically active whereas 1-bromo-2-chloroethane is not optically active. Explain.arrow_forward
- Isooctane is the common name of the isomer of C8H18 used as the standard of 100 for the gasoline octane rating: (a) What is the IUPAC name for the compound?(b) Name the other isomers that contain a five-carbon chain with three methyl substituents.arrow_forwardGive the structural formula (condensed or skeletal) of the given IUPAC names of saturated hydrocarbons. 1) 2-methyl-3-oxohept-4-enoic acid 2) 4-chloro-2-oxohexanoyl chloride 3) 4-nitro-4-propoxybut-1-ene 4) 1-hydroxyhex-5-yn-2-one 5) 1-methylpropyl 3-amino-3-(1-methylpropoxy)propanoate 6) 1-ethoxy-3-mercaptohexane-2-thionearrow_forwardwrite the structure formulas of alkanes with molecular formula C6H14, which with chlorine give: a) three monochlorinated isomers? b) five monochlorinated isomers c) only two monochlorinated isomersarrow_forward
- Write the condensed structural formulas for two alkenes and one alkyne that all have the molecular formula C6H10.arrow_forward(a) Alkenes are relatively stable compounds but are more reactive than alkanes and serve as a feedstock for the petrochemical industry because they can participate in a wide variety of reactions. Predict the products obtained from following reaction. Write the chemical reaction and name the products according to IUPAC system. (i) the reaction of 3-ethyl-3-methyl-1-pentene with hydrogen bromide (ii) the reaction of 3-ethyl-2-pentene with hydrogen bromidearrow_forwardDraw all possible structure(s) and give the IUPAC systematic name(s) of an alkane or cycloalkane with the formula C8H18 that has only primary hydrogen atoms. Draw the structure(s).arrow_forward
