Concept introduction: Atelectasis is the non-aeration or collapse of the lungs or a part of the lungs. The collapse of lung decreases the exchange of gases and leads to chronic hypoxia. This condition arises when the alveoli are deflated or probably filled with liquid. Atelectasis may be a chronic or acute condition.
