Normal depth is the flow depth in uniform flow with constant slope, surface roughness and cross section area in open channel.
Fluid will accelerate along the flow with potential head. Let the slope and cross section area is constant for any flow conditions. The fluid velocity only decreases with friction resistance. A condition reached when frictional resistance overcomes the potential head. At this point, velocity becomes uniform and there is no acceleration of the fluid. At this condition, flow depth is called normal depth. It is represented by
