Concept explainers
Inquiry question Mendel did not examine plant height and pod shape in his dihybrid crosses. The genes for these traits are very close together on the same chromosome. How would this have changed Mendel’s results?
To determine: The process in which the situation has changed the results of Mendel.
Introduction: Mendel experimented on pea plant and selected traits like the height of the plant, position of flower, the color of a pod, form of an unripe pod, the color of the seed coat, color of cotyledons and form of a seed.
Explanation of Solution
Mendel did not examine plant height and pot shape in his dihybrid cross and the Gene's for these lies very close to each other and this can affect the result of Mendel's study. The genes located on different chromosomes assort independently and give the dihybrid ratio of 9:3:3:1 and testcross ratio of 1:1:1:1. In this case, parental type and recombinant type are formed in equal proportion. In the case of linked genes, there will be no formation of recombinants or fewer recombinants will be formed. The dihybrid test will be disturbed.

- Need help Q1: Assuming these two genes sort independently, how many progeny would you expect to show the green striped phenotype? (Enter your answers as a whole number, e.g. 1) Q2: Which of the following are recombinant phenotypes? (Select all that apply) A. Green and Spotted B. Green and Striped C. Yellow and Spotted: D. Yellow and Stripedarrow_forwardKnow how to effectively complete simple Mendelian genetics problems (both monohybrids and dihybrids). - Question A child who is blood type A has a mother who is blood type B. In a paternity suit a man is accused of being the father. He has blood type AB. Is he the father? Yes No He cannot be excluded as the father. There is a 12.5% chance that he is the father. Question If a color-blind female has children, what do we know about all of her sons? It is impossible to know without knowing the father’s genotype. Half of the sons will be color-blind. All sons will have normal color vision. All sons will be color blind. Question What is true about sexual reproduction? Sexual reproduction produces a haploid zygote. Each parent contributes a haploid gene set to offspring. Sexual reproduction consists of mitosis only. Sexual reproduction involves the union of diploid gametes. Explain why it is possible for the proband in the following pedigree to have children of blood types A, B, and AB. Considering epistatic genes, what are the possible genotypes of II-2? 2. Agouti (A) is wild type and produces alternating bands of pigment on each hair. Black (a) is recessive to agouti. A mutation on gene B (recessive b) can eliminate all color. - Question:- Why did Mendel observe the principle of uniformity? Because all traits in peas are fully controlled by genotype Because Mendel only worked with discontinuous traits, which give only two classes of phenotypes Because Mendel worked with very large number of progeny All of the abovearrow_forwardQuestion: On the basis of Mendel's hypothesis and observations, predict the results from the following crosses in garden peas: (a) a tall (dominant and homozygous) variety crossed with a dwarf variety: (b) the progeny of (a) selfed; (c) the progeny from (a) crossed with the original tall parent; (d) the progeny from (a) crossed with the original dwarf-parent variety.arrow_forwardWritten Response 1a) Identify the genotypes of individuals ii-1, ii-4, iii-4, and IV-1. b) If individual III-9 and individual III-10 have another child, what is the probability that this child will have normal colour vision?
