Chapter 13, Problem 74P
The mysterious visitor that appears in the enchanting story The Little Prince was said to come from a planet that “was scarcely any larger than a house!” Assume that the mass per unit volume of the planet is about that of Earth and that the planet does not appreciably spin. Approximate (a) the free-fall acceleration on the planet's surface and (b) the escape speed from the planet.

A space station is constructed in the shape of a wheel 20 m in diameter, with essentially all of its 5.2×105 kg mass at the rim. Once the station is completed, it is set rotating at a rate that requires an object at the rim to have radial acceleration g , thereby simulating Earth's surface gravity. This is accomplished using two small rockets, each with 130 N thrust, that are mounted on the rim of the station. How long will it take to reach the desired spin rate, and how many revolutions will the station make in this time?
Assume the earth is a uniform sphere of mass M and radius R. As strange as it may sound, if one can dig a long tunnel from one side of the Earth straight through the center and exit the other end, any object falling into the tunnel will appear at the other end (i.e. the opposite side of the Earth) in just 2530 s (42.2 min). Call that time t. Let t be a function of G, M, and R, where G = 6.67 x 10^-11 m3 kg−1 s−2 is the Universal Gravitational Constant, M = 5.98 x 10^24 kg, and R = 6400 km.
(a) From dimensional analysis alone find the expression for t, up to a numerical constant c.(b) Determine the value of c by using the above values in the expression found in part (a).
In the blockbuster hit Gravity, Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are in a shuttle that is going through a debris field every 90 mins. The only way this could happen is if some of the debris was moving in the same orbit as the shuttle but in the opposite direction, as schematically shown in the figure to the right. Assume the orbits are perfectly circular for simplicity, and use the fact that the mass and radius of the earth are = 5.973 X 10^24 kg and R = 6.370 X 10^3 km, respectively. (a) What is the altitude of the orbit of the two pseudo-astronauts? (b) What speed are George and Sandra moving at? (c) Say Sandra?s mass (with spacesuit and all) is 85 kg. What is her total energy in this orbit?

At the low point, or perigee, of its orbit, it is 300 km above the earth's surface; at the high point, or apogee, it is 4500 km above the earth's surface. What is the period of the spacecraft's orbit? Using conservation of angular momentum, find the ratio of the spacecraft's speed at perigee to its speed at apogee. Using conservation of energy, find the speed at perigee and the speed at apogee. It is necessary to have the spacecraft escape from the earth completely.
