Chapter 13, Problem 8MC
Summary Introduction
Introduction:
Acute infections are those infections in which pathogen lives inside the host for a limited period of time. They generally occur less than 6 months and have long-lasting effects. In acute infections, the growthrate of the pathogen is fast and reproduce over the course of a few days. In acute infections, sudden onset of symptoms appeared in a short duration of time. Acute infection results inthe release of infectious agents from the infected host, Such asamoebiasis, meningitis, Chagas disease, pharyngitis, infectious mononucleosis, and a rheumatic disease. Acute infections can persist for some longer period of time.

Normal microbiota provide protection from infection in each of the following ways EXCEPT:
Question 3 options:
A)
they produce antibacterial chemicals.
B)
they compete with pathogens for nutrients.
C)
they make the chemical environment unsuitable for nonresident bacteria.
D)
they produce lysozyme.
Pathogenic infections induce damage to the host by a variety of mechanisms. While many mechanisms are direct effects of the pathogen, some damaging mechanisms result from the immune response to the infection. Examples of damage caused by the host immune response are:
a) Exotoxin production, endotoxin
b) Cell-mediated inmunity, direct cytopathic effect
c) Endotoxin, inmmunune complexes
d) Direct cythopathic effect, endotoxin
e) Cell-mediated inmunity, inmmunune complexes
Respiratory syncytial virusa) is a leading cause of serious lower respiratory tract infections in infants.b) is an enveloped DNA virus of the adenovirus family.c) attaches to host cell membranes by means of neuraminidase.d) poses no threat to elderly people.e) mainly causes disease in the summer months.
