Answer to Problem 56AAP

The time required to uniformly corrode the steel to a thickness of 0.030mm is 15.2years.

Explanation of Solution

Write the expression for corrosion rate.

  wt=IMnF                                                                                                        (I)

Here, the corrosion rate is w/t, the current flow is I, atomic mass of the metal is M, number of electrons per atoms produced or consumed in the process is n, and the Faraday’s constant is F, F=96500C/molor96500As/mol.

The current density is expressed as,

  i=IAI=iA

Substitute iA for I in Equation (I).

  wt=(iA)MnFwAt=iMnF                                                                                                 (II)

Here, the corrosion rate per area is w/At.

Write the formula for time required for corrosion of required depth.

  t=ρ×required depthcorrosion rate per area                                                                          (III)

Conclusion:

Refer Table 13.1, “Standard electrode potentials at 25 °C”.

The anodic reaction of zinc is as follows:

  Zn2++2eZn

Here, the number of electrons produced is, n=2.

Refer Figure 2.3, “Periodic Table of Elements”

The atomic mass of zinc is, MZn=65.38g/mol.

Substitute 1.32×107A/cm2 for i, 65.38g/ mol for M, 2 for n, and 96500As/mol for F in Equation (II).

  wAt=(1.32×107A/cm2)(65.38g/ mol)(2)(96500As/mol)=4.4716×1011g/cm2s4.472×1011g/cm2s

The density of the zinc is 7.13g/cm3.

Substitute 7.13g/cm3 for ρ, 0.030mm for required depth, and 4.472×1011g/cm2s for corrosion rate per area in Equation (II).

  t=7.13g/cm3×0.030mm4.472×1011g/cm2s=7.13g/cm3×0.030mm×1cm10mm4.472×1011g/cm2s=478353819.6s×1hr3600s×1day24hr=5536.5025days×1year365days

  =15.1685years15.2years

Thus, the time required to uniformly corrode (zinc coating) the steel to a thickness of 0.030mm is 15.2years.
