Chapter 13.3, Problem 13.141P
The triple jump is a track-and-field event in which an athlete gets a running start and tries to leap as far as he can with a hop, step, and jump. Shown in the figure is the initial hop of the athlete. Assuming that he approaches the takeoff line from the left with a horizontal velocity of 10 m/s, remains in contact with the ground for 0.18 s, and takes off at a 50° angle with a velocity of 12 m/s, determine the vertical component of the average impulsive force exerted by the ground on his foot. Give your answer in terms of the weight W of the athlete.

. In an elevator shaft, a ball is thrown vertically upward with an initial velocity of 18 m/s from a height of 12 m above ground. At the same instant, an open-platform elevator passes the 5-m level, moving upward with a constant velocity of 2 m/s. Determine (a) when and where the ball hits the elevator, (b) the relative velocity of the ball with respect to the elevator when the ball hits the elevator.
In a football game, player A passes the ball directly to player B to hit a goal point E. If player B runs to a constant speed of 2.55 m/s, and the initial distance of player B from player A and point E is 13.10 m and 6.12m, respectively, find the initial velocity of the ball if player B will receive the ball at a height of 2.16m from point E.
Ball A is thrown vertically upward from the top of a 30-m-high building with an initial velocity of 5 m/s. At the same instant, another ball B is thrown upward from the ground with an initial velocity of 20 m/s. Determine the height from the ground and the time at which they pass each other.
