Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
The reaction of ethanal with Tollens’ reagent has to be written.
Concept Introduction:
Tollens’ reagent is basic solution of silver ammonia complex. It is mainly used for oxidation of aldehydes. The silver ion is reduced to silver metal as the aldehyde is oxidized to a carboxylate anion. Silver metal precipitates from the solution and coats the flask, producing a smooth silver mirror. The test is often called tollens’ silver mirror test.
Ketones cannot be oxidized acids and do not react with the tollens’ reagent.
The general reaction is,
(b)
