To obtain: True-breeding curled ear cats and how to be sure that they are true-breeding.
Concept introduction:
Genes have alternate forms known as alleles, which are transmitted to the offspring. If the offspring receives the same phenotypic traits of the parents, then it is known as true-breeding. If the two alleles are different, then there is a hybrid at F1 generation. The dominant allele out of the two alleles expresses itself and determines the phenotype. In F1 individuals, two different alleles segregate into gametes. During self-fertilization, the gametes unite randomly thereby having a chance for recessive allele to be expressed in the homozygous state at F2 generation.

- When you decide to breed your Labrador retriever Molly and sell the puppies, you discover that two of Mollys four siblings have developed a hip disorder that is traceable to the action of a single recessive allele. Molly herself shows no sign of the disorder. If you breed Molly to a male Labrador that does not carry the recessive allele, can you assure a purchaser that the puppies will also be free of the condition? Explain your answer.arrow_forwardYou are studying a population of penguins in Antarctica. Your DNA analysis of this population reveals that for the feather color pattern gene, 35 individuals are homozygous dominant, 35 individuals are heterozygous, and 30 individuals are homozygous recessive. After observing this population for several years, you repeat your DNA study and find that the current generation of penguins has 15 individuals that are homozygous dominant, 10 individuals that are heterozygous, and 75 individuals that are homozygous recessive. Which of the following hypotheses for this data would be supported by this data based on your understanding of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium? This population of penguins is maintaining Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium due to its large population size. The penguins are randomly choosing mates, which has led to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The penguins are very isolated, which is preventing gene flow from affecting Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The recessive phenotype in…arrow_forwardSometimes, genetic make-ups do not show up as traits. Let us assume Jane has beautiful brown eyes. Her dad has beautiful blue eyes (pure-bred blue eyes, to say, he has only blue eye genes), while her mom has beautiful brown eyes (pure-bred brown eyes, to say, she has only brown eye genes). Then Jane must be a half brown eye and a half-blue eye, but she has only brown eyes. Why and how this could happen?arrow_forward
- Brown fur vs white fur. Say that the alleles for fur color (brown or white) are written using the letter “B” and “b”. The dominant trait is brown, white fur color represents the recessive trait. If you crossed two homozygous recessive individuals for fur color, what would be the chances of having an offspring with the white phenotype?arrow_forward"In cattle, the allele that causes horns to grow is recessive. Another recessive allele causes the cows to grow abnormally large and muscular. These muscular cows are often called Belgian blue cows. If a cow that is heterozygous for both the horn and Belgian blue trait genes passes on the allele for growing horns to an offspring, what are the odds that the parent cow also passes on the allele for becoming very muscular to that offspring?" I know the answer is 50% but how do I get to this answer?arrow_forwardDuring the millennia in which selective breeding was practiced, why did breeders fail to uncover the principle that traits are governed by discrete units of inheritance (that is, by genes)?arrow_forward
- IN TRANSYLVANIA, SOME PEOPLE EXHIBIT TWO UNUSUAL TRAITS IN WHICH THEY HAVE VERY LONG FRONT TEETH AND THE INABILITY TO BE AWAKE WHEN THE SUN IS UP. BOTH OF THESE TRAITS APPEAR TO BE RECESSIVE. IF A WOMAN WHO IS HETEROZYGOUS FOR TEETH AND HOMOZYGOUS NORMAL FOR BEING IN THE SUN MARRIES A MAN WHO HAS BOTH THESE TRAITS, WHAT COULD BE THE PHENOTYPES AND GENOTYPES OF THEIR CHILDREN? USE A PUNNET SQUARE AND SHOW ALL WORK. LIST THE RATIOS FOR THE GENOTYPES AND PHENOTYPES.arrow_forwardBrown fur vs white fur. Say that the alleles for fur color (brown or white) are written using the letter “B” and “b”. The dominant trait is brown, white fur color represents the recessive trait. If you crossed two heterozygous individuals for fur color, what would be the chances of having an offspring with the white phenotype?arrow_forwardA genetic engineer is going to cross two watermelon plants to produce seeds for a spring planting. He is breeding for size, and wants to have as many watermelons with the phenotype for long shape as possible. In watermelons, the allele for short shape (R) is dominant to the allele for long shape (r). Would crossing a watermelon homozygous recessive for the trait with a watermelon heterozygous for the trait give the most long watermelons possible? Explain your answer using Punnett Squares.arrow_forward
- Two genes, U and H, affect wing development in a species of flying pigs, where some pigs have wings and some do not. Pigs with wings are always homozygous at gene U (U1U1). Among pigs with wings, allele H4 codes for grey feathers and is dominant over allele H5, which codes for white feathers. Which of the following best describes this scenario? Group of answer choices 1.Recessive epistasis of U over H 2.Dominant epistasis of H over U 3.Duplicate Recessive Epistasis 4.Dominant epistasis of U over H 5.Duplicate Dominant Epistasis 6.Recessive epistasis of H over Uarrow_forwardBrown fur vs white fur. Say that the alleles for fur color (brown or white) are written using the letter “B” and “b”. The dominant trait is brown, white fur color represents the recessive trait. How would you write out a homozygous dominant individual?arrow_forwardIn rural northeast Kansas domesticated cats are becoming wild, and biologists are observing that wildcats occur in three colors. Fur color is controlled by a single gene that exhibits incomplete dominance. A homozygous dominant cat is blue (BB), a homozygous recessive cat is red (bb), and a heterozygous wildcat will be purple (Bb). What would be the expected phenotypes of the offspring if a blue wildcat mates with a red wildcat? Develop a Punnett square and list the genotypes as well.arrow_forward
