Cost allocation in hospitals, alternative allocation criteria. Harold Monette vacationed at Lake Tahoe last winter. Unfortunately, he broke his ankle while skiing and spent two days at the Sierra University Hospital. Monette’s insurance company received a $4,950 bill for his two-day stay. One item that caught Monette’s attention was a $10.60 charge for a roll of cotton. Monette is a salesman for Johnson & Johnson and knows that the cost to the hospital of the roll of cotton is between $2.45 and $3.25. He asked for a breakdown of the $10.60 charge. The accounting office of the hospital sent him the following information:
a. Invoiced cost of cotton roll | $2.65 |
b. Cost of processing of paperwork for purchase | 0.57 |
c. Supplies-room management fee | 0.74 |
d. Operating-room and patient-room handling costs | 1.62 |
e. Administrative hospital costs | 1.06 |
f. University teaching-related costs | 0.61 |
g. Malpractice insurance costs | 1.18 |
h. Cost of treating uninsured patients | 1.52 |

EBK HORNGREN'S COST ACCOUNTING
- Greg Morrison recently graduated from mortuary school. He is considering opening his own funeral home. A funeral home is a high-fixed cost business, as it requires considerable expenditures for facilities, labor, and equipment, no matter how many families are served. Assume the annual fixed cost of operations is $800,000. Further assume that the only significant variable cost relates to burial containers like urns and caskets. An average casket costs $1,200. Greg's banker has asked a variety of questions in contemplation of providing a loan for this business. The banker has suggested that Greg can reduce his fixed costs by $150,000 if he will not buy any vehicles. Greg can instead rent vehicles as needed. The variable cost of renting is $700 per family served. Will this suggestion help Greg reach the break-even point sooner?arrow_forwardGreg Morrison recently graduated from mortuary school. - Make or Buy - Home Grocery (HG) provides home delivery of groceries. Customers submit orders to the HG website by selecting the needed items from a menu. Currently, HG has employees who deliver the groceries, but the company is considering the option of contracting out deliveries. The fixed cost of the grocery delivery operation is $500,000 per year, of which, $200,000 is avoidable if grocery deliveries are contracted out. On average, the fixed annual delivery cost per customer is $250 and the average variable delivery cost of each grocery item delivered is $0.50. On average, each customer purchases 1,000 grocery items per year. Therefore, if there are 2,000 customers budgeted, the number of grocery item deliveries will be 2 million.
