Concept explainers
Both members of a couple know that they are carriers of the cystic fibrosis allele. None of their three children has cystic fibrosis, but any one of them might be a carrier The couple would like to have a fourth child but are worried that he or she would very likety have the disease, since the first three do not. What would you tell the couple? Would it remove some uncertainty from their prediction if they could find out whether the three children are carriers?

- The following pedigree shows the pattern of inheritance of red-green color blindness in a family. Females are shown as circles and males as squares; the squares or circles of individuals affected by the trait are filled in black. What is the chance that a son of the third-generation female indicated by the arrow will be color blind if the father is not color blind? If he is color blind?arrow_forwardCystic fibrosis is an autosomal disease that mainly affects the white population, and 1 in 20 whites are heterozygotes. Genetic testing can diagnose heterozygotes. Should a genetic screening program for cystic fibrosis be instituted? Should the federal government fund it? Should the program be voluntary or mandatory, and why?arrow_forwardAs it turned out, one of the tallest Potsdam Guards had an unquenchable attraction to short women. During his tenure as guard, he had numerous clandestine affairs. In each case, children resulted. Subsequently, some of the childrenwho had no way of knowing that they were relatedmarried and had children of their own. Assume that two pairs of genes determine height. The genotype of the 7-foot-tall Potsdam Guard was A9A9B9B9, and the genotype of all of his 5-foot clandestine lovers was AABB. An A9 or B9 allele in the offspring each adds 6 inches to the base height of 5 feet conferred by the AABB genotype. a. What were the genotypes and phenotypes of all the F1 children? b. Diagram the cross between the F1 offspring, and give all possible genotypes and phenotypes of the F2 progenyarrow_forward
- A young couple went to see a genetic counselor because each had a sibling with cystic fibrosis. (Cystic fibrosis is a recessive disease, and neither member of the couple nor any of their four parents is affected.) What is the probability that the female of this couple is a carrier? What are the chances that their child will have cystic fibrosis? 3. What is the probability that their child will be a carrier of the cystic fibrosis disease allele?arrow_forwardA young couple went to see a genetic counselor because each had a sibling affected with cystic fibrosis. (Cystic fibrosis is a recessive disease and neither member of the couple nor any of their four parents is affected). What is the probability that the female of this couple is a carrier and what are the chances that their child will be affected with cystic fibrosis?arrow_forwardAlbinism is a recessive disorder where there is a lack of melanin. Andrea and her husband Claude both have normal skin pigmentation. Andrea’s mother has the albino phenotype, but her father and her brother do not (normal pigmentation). Claude’s parents are both normal, but he has a sister who has the condition (is albino). Answer the following questions If Andrea and Claude are carriers for the albino allele, what is the probability that they have an albino child? If Andrea and Claude have a second child, what is the probability this child be normal (non-albino)? NOTE: Draw a punnet square or show your work.arrow_forward
- A couple who are about to get married learn from studying their family histories that, in both their families, theirunaffected grandparents had siblings with cystic fibrosis(a rare autosomal recessive disease).a. If the couple marries and has a child, what is theprobability that the child will have cystic fibrosis?b. If they have four children, what is the chance that thechildren will have the precise Mendelian ratio of 3:1 fornormal:cystic fibrosis?c. If their first child has cystic fibrosis, what is theprobability that their next three children will be normal?arrow_forwardA couple seeks advice from a genetic counselor because they know that they are both carriers for cystic fibrosis (which is autosomal recessive), and the woman is a carrier for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (which is sex-linked recessive). For each of their future sons and daughters (calculate separately), what is the probability that they will be affected for: Both cystic fibrosis and nuscular dystrophy If the couple’s first born son has both cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy, what is the probability that their second born son will have both diseases?arrow_forwardMarfan’s syndrome is an example of pleiotrophy where individuals with a copy of the dominant allele have skeletal disorders, mitral valve prolapse and characteristic slender, loose joints. If Abraham Lincoln had a marfanoid disorder which he inherited from his mother, what are the chances he passed this trait on to his offspring? Consider that Mary Todd Lincoln, his wife, was 5’2”. please include a punnett squarearrow_forward
- Multiple Alleles: Sol is blood type AB and Luna is blood B, what are the odds that they will have a blood type AB child? How about A or B? Is O possible?arrow_forwardA healthy young couple, Charlie and Eva, both with families histories of cystic fibrosis, visits a genetic counselor before deciding whether to have children. The genetic counselor analyzed their pedigree to determine if they are carriers of the alleles for cystic fibrosis. On a sheet of paper, draw the given pedigree chart below and label each individual with the correct genotype.arrow_forwardDuchenne muscular dystrophy is a sex-linked recessive disorder characterized by a progressive loss of muscle tissue. Neither Carla nor Rudy has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, but their first son does have it. What can you say about Rudy's or Carla's genotype in relation with the disorder? If the couple has a second child, what is the probability that he or she will also have the disease? Show your answers with a Punnet square.arrow_forward
