Cigarette Use The percentage of college freshmen who smoke declined substantially from the year 2004 to the year 2014. Figure 14 shows the percentage of college freshmen who smoked during six of the years of that time period and the least-squares line for the data, where x represents the number of years after 2004. (Source: Higher Education Research Institute, UCLA.)
Figure 14 Percentage of College Freshmen Who Smoke
(a) Obtain the least-squares line that fits the data.
(b) Use the equation to determine the percentage of the 2009 freshmen class who smoked.
(c) According to the least-squares line, in what year did approximately 4.9% of college freshmen smoke?

Let x represent the year, with x=8 corresponding to 2008. (b) Use the linear regression capabilities of a graphing utility to find a linear model for the data. How does this model compare with the model obtained in part a? (c) Use the linear model to create a table of estimated values for y. Compare the estimated values with the actual data.arrow_forwardFill in the blanks. Two techniques for fitting models to data are direct and inverse and least squares .arrow_forwardDemand A hardware retailer wants to know the demand for a rechargeable power drill as a function of price. The ordered pairs (25,82),(30,75),(35,67), and (40,55) represent the price x in dollars and the corresponding monthly sales y. Find the least squares regression line for the data. Estimate the demand when the price is 32.95.arrow_forward
