Concept explainers
Exercises 57 through 60 refer to the following story (see also Exercise 32): The Dean of Students at Tasmania State University wants to determine how many undergraduates at TSU are familiar with a new financial aid program offered by the university. There are 15,000 undergraduates at TSU, so it is too expensive to conduct a census. The following sampling method, known as systematic sampling, is used to choose a representative sample of undergraduates to poll. Start with the registrar’s alphabetical listing containing the names of all undergraduates. Randomly pick a number between 1 and 100, and count that far down the list. Take that name and every 100th name after it. For example, if the random number chosen is 73, then pick the 73rd, 173rd, 273rd, and so forth, names on the list.
a. Explain why the method used for choosing the sample is not simple random sampling.

- If you were a researcher and wanted to conduct a research within your Barangay, what would it be? What sampling technique are you going to use?arrow_forwardSuppose that a poll was taken in order to assess the number of gypsy moth nests in Pennsylvania. 200 Pennsylvania trees were surveyed by Penn State researchers on the closest mountain to campus. Which of the following sampling plans was used in this survey? Group of answer choices stratified sample volunteer sample convenience sample systematic sample Suppose that a poll was taken in order to assess the number of gypsy moth nests in Pennsylvania. 200 Pennsylvania trees were surveyed by Penn State researchers on the closest mountain to campus. Which of the following types of bias could be attributed to the results? Group of answer choices non-response bias selection biasarrow_forward. Suppose that the second researcher conducted his survey by choosing 40 patients he knew. What sampling method would that researcher have used? What concerns would you have about this data set, based upon the data collection method?arrow_forward
- In the final sampling design, what is the type of sampling in the first stage? A. simple random sampling B. stratified random sampling C. cluster sampling D. multistage sampling In the final sampling design, what is the type of sampling frame? A. List of food chains B. List of food chains in Mayor's Office C. List of streets D. List of food chain sizesarrow_forwardFor each of the following scenarios, identify which sampling method is used (see textbook for names) A. The city population consists of four major ethnic groups that are not equally represented in the population. To ensure that the sample reflects these differences, the researcher first determines the number of residents in each ethnic group and then selects a sample so that the number for each group in the sample is in direct relation to the number in each group for the entire city population. B. The County Democratic Committee would like to determine which issues are most important to registered Democrats in the county. Starting with a list of registered Democrats, the committee uses a random process to select a sample of 30 names for telephone interviews. C. A medical research laboratory places ads in the local newspaper to recruit people with chronic migraine headaches to participate in clinical trials evaluating a new medication. Qualified individuals are asked to phone…arrow_forwardIdentify the sampling technique used in the following situations: 1) A student collected arm lengths from her family members. 2) A new computer sales team separated a city by zip codes and then randomly selected 50 homes to question about their new software. 3) Every 5th driver was checked as to their sobriety at a check point by a local police department. 4) a real estate sales person divided an area by sale prices of homes and questioned them as to their interest in listing their house for sale.arrow_forward
- Suppose that Fairfax County has N=400,000 households. Further, assume that for we have a complete list of these households that contains information for each household that includes estimated household income, household zip code, household address, high school related to the address. We want to collect information from either a sample of n=2000 or conduct a census of all 400,000 by using one of the techniques described below: A = Simple Random Sampling B = Stratified Sampling C = Cluster Sampling D = Systematic Sampling E = Census F = Experimental Design For each scenario below, determine which of the above techniques most closely resembles the data collection strategy being considered. For each scenario you can just designate the technique by using the appropriate letter from above. No further work need to be shown. Using household income, we sort the list from lowest to highest household income and label these sorted households as 1 to 400,000 on our list. We generate a…arrow_forwardA researcher divided subjects into two groups according to gender and then selected 200 members from each group for his sample. What sampling method was the researcher using?arrow_forwardA researcher divided subjects into two groups according to gender and then selected a fixed proportion of members from each group for his sample. What sampling method was the researcher using? A. Stratified sample. B. Simple random sample. C. Voluntary response sample. D. Cluster sample.arrow_forward
