In an article about unusual allergies, a doctor explained that allergy to sulfites is usually seen in patients with asthma. The typical reaction is a sudden increase in asthma symptoms after eating a food containing sulfites. Studies are
performed to estimate the percentage of the nation's 10 million asthmatics who are allergic to sulfites. In one survey, 33 of 500 randomly selected asthmatics in the country were found to be allergic to sulfites. Find and interpret a 95%
confidence interval for the proportion, p, of all asthmatics in the country who are allergic to sulfites.

Fifteen inbred laboratory rats (Rattus norvegi-cus) were randomly assigned to three groups of five each. Each rat was inoculated with Staphylococcus mucans, a bacterium involved in the process of tooth decay. One group (control) was given no additional treatment. A second group was given drug A, and a third group was given drug B. At the end of six weeks, the extent of tooth decay in the
rats was evaluated as percent of tooth decay. This is a fairly subjective measurement based on the combined evaluation of three observ-ers and should probably be regarded as an ordinal measurement. We wish to know if there is a difference among the three groups.

- A sleep researcher conducts an experiment to determine whether sleep loss affects the ability to maintain sustained attention. Fifteen individuals are randomly divided into the following three groups of five subjects each: group 1, which gets the normal amount of sleep (7-8); group 2, which is sleep-deprived for 24 hours; and group 3, which is sleep-deprived for 48 hours. All three groups are tested on the same auitory vigilance task. Subjects are presented with half-second tones spaced at irregular intervals over a 1-hour duration. Occasionally, one of the tones is slightly shorter than the rest. The subject's task is to detect the shorter tones. The following percentages of correct detections were observed (in picture): g. As per the authors: “Each year, rotavirus gastroenteritis is responsible for about 37% of deaths from diarrhea among children younger than 5 years of age worldwide, with a disproportionate effect in sub-Saharan Africa. We conducted a randomized, placebo-controlled trial in Niger to evaluate the efficacy of a live, oral bovine rotavirus pentavalent vaccine (BRV-PV, Serum Institute of India) to prevent severe rotavirus gastroenteritis. Healthy infants received three doses of the vaccine or placebo at 6, 10, and 14 weeks of age. Episodes of rotavirus gastroenteritis were assessed through active and passive surveillance.” The following Kaplan-Meier curves show the time to a diagnosis of rotavirus gastroenteritis separately for the vaccine and placebo samples.
