Description
The specific gravity of a battery has been tested.
All cells have a corrected reading of about 1.200.
Technician A says the battery needs to be recharged
before further testing.
Technician B says the battery is sulfated and needs
to be replaced.
Who is correct?
A. A only
В. В only
C. Both A and B
D. Neither A nor B
2. Ion channels that permit ions to pass between the interior of the cell and the extra-cellular medium are
an important part of a living cell. There are multiple mechanisms that happen in an ion channel, but the
simplest is that ions flow through the cell preferentially in one direction as a result of diffusion arising
from a difference of ion concentrations on the inside and outside of the cell.

Cout
As a first model of an ion channel, let's see how it would behave if the flux through the open
channel were simply due to diffusion arising from a concentration difference. We'll model
the open channel as a cylinder as shown in the figure at the left.

Fick's law for flow due to a concentration gradient is J

constant and J has dimensions corresponding to number per unit area per unit time.
2.1 A typical ion channel radius is about 1 nm (nanometer), and the thickness of the cell membrane is
about 7 nm. The concentration of Na+ ions inside a mammalian…
The velocity of the blood in the aorta is about 0.5 m/s, and the velocity of the blood in a capillary is about 0.001 m/s. We have only one aorta, with a diameter of 20 mm, but many capillaries in parallel, each with a diameter of 8 μm. Using vascular resistance approach estimate how many capillaries are typically open at any one time.

- Review. To measure how far below the ocean surface a bird dives to catch a fish, a scientist uses a method originated by Lord Kelvin. He dusts the interiors of plastic tubes with powdered sugar and then seals one end of each tube. He captures the bird at nighttime in its nest and attaches a tube to its back. He then catches the same bird the next night and removes the tube. In one trial, using a tube 6.50 cm long, water washes away the sugar over a distance of 2.70cm from the open end of the tube. Find the greatest depth to which the bird dived, assuming the air in the tube stayed at constant temperature.arrow_forwardPlease tapy answerarrow_forwardA continuous drip of an antidysrhythmic medication is ordered at a rate of 2 mg/min.
