To compare: The protein import into the ER and into the nucleus.
Concept introduction: For the proteins to import into the nucleus, the nuclear localization signal or sequence must tag the protein to be imported. Importin proteins will be present to bind the cargo protein so that they can interact with the nuclear pore complex and can pass through the channel. The protein import into the ER occurs co-translationally by the ribosomes on the ER with the translated protein going through a protein pore called translocator.
To explain: The reason that the ER mechanism might not work for nuclear import and vice versa.
