The cerebral cortex is a layer that covers the surface of the cerebral hemispheres. It is only a 2 to 3 mm thick layer and it highly folded into the sulci and gyri of the cerebrum. Cerebral cortex is connected to various structures such as basal ganglia and thalamus. It sends the information to these structures along the efferent connections and receive the information from them by the afferent connections.
