Answer to Problem 1GST

The absorption of nutrients and other materials by trees before leaching from the soil causes lush plant growth in poor soils.

Explanation of Solution

The thick red soils associated with the wet tropics and subtropics are characterized by very low fertility. The high temperature and heavy rainfall conditions result in the leaching of these soils. However, lush tropical forests occurred in association with these soils.

The nutrients required for the growth of plants are already absorbed and locked in the tree itself. The decomposition of these tree results in the release of these nutrients again into the soil. However, they will be readily absorbed by other trees before they are leached from the soil. This process cyclically continuous and hence, the growth of lush plants occurs in poor soils.
