Chapter 15, Problem 25P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The configuration of 2phenylbutane produced by the reaction of lithium diphenylcuprate with optically active 2-bromobutane is to be determined.

Concept introduction:

With net inversion of configuration, lithium dialkylcuprates react with alkyl halides.

A new carbon-carbon bond is formed between the alkyl group of the halide and the cuprate.

The Cahn-Ingold-Prelog rule system ranks the substituents in the chirality center in the order of decreasing atomic number.

After the substituents at the chiral center is ranked with decreasing priority order, the next step is to orient the molecule so that the bond to the lowest ranked substituent points away from the observer. This is used to determine if the sequence of decreasing priority of the other three substituents is clockwise or counterclockwise. If this path is clockwise, then the configuration is R, and if it is counterclockwise, the configuration is S.

Explain why the ether obtained by treating an optically active alcohol with PBr3 in pyridine followed by sodium methoxide has the same configuration as the alcohol, whereas the ether obtained by treating the alcohol with tosyl chloride followed by sodium methoxide has a configuration opposite that of the alcohol.
With organolithium and organomagnesium compounds, approach to the carbonyl carbon from the less hindered direction is generally preferred. Assuming this is the case, predict the structure of the major product formed by reaction of methylmagnesium bromide with 4-tert-butylcyclohexanone.
While dehydrating 2-Methlycyclohexanol to 1-Methlycyclohexanol, and 3-Methlycyclohexanol 1)what is the common problem associate with E1 reaction? Discuss the intermediate. 2) Briefly compare and contrast E1 vs E2 Elimination reactions. INclude details such as speed of the reactions in relation to each other, rate-determining steps (E1), and stereochemical requirements (E2). Mention whether the steps of the reactions are reversible and discuss the conditions that can drive the equilibrium to favor product formation.
