The mucous membranes cover all body cavities which open to the outside. The mucous membrane is the first line of defense of the body. It acts non-specifically against pathogens. Mucous membrane is composed of epithelial, connective, and smooth muscle tissue. It contains secreting glands and performs the function of protection, absorption, and secretion. It lines all body cavities and open to the exterior body surface.
