A coenzyme is a varied group of small nonprotein, organic, freely diffusing compounds that are loosely attached with an essential that allows enzymatic activity, acting as the carrier molecules that transfer electrons, chemical groups, etc. The well-recognized coenzymes comprise adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which transfer the phosphate groups; nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (both NADH and NADPH), which transfers hydrogen and electrons; coenzyme A, which transfers the acetyl groups; and the S-adenosylmethionine coenzyme, which transfers the methyl groups.
