Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The reactant molecule for the synthesis of cyclohexene derivative is to be predicted.
Concept Introduction:
The catalyst used is the Grubbs catalyst
Ring closing metathesis for olefins also takes place in which two double bonds belong to the same molecule. In this intramolecular reaction, a new ring is formed.
Most of the times, the reactant molecule contain terminal double bonds. When these terminal double bond reacts, they exchange methylene groups to produce ethylene which bubbles away from the reaction medium.
In this reaction, the cleavage of the double bonds in the reactant alkene molecule occurs and these fragments are redistributed to form new two carbon-carbon double bonds.
In this reaction, new

- Which one of the statements below is wrong about Zaitsev’s Rule. a. None of the above b. The Zaitsev’s Rule demonstrate the principle of regioselectivity in elimination reactions c. The more substituted alkene is the major product of E1 or E2 elimination d. The more substituted alkane product is obtained when a proton is removed from β-carbon that is bonded to the fewest hydrogens e. The most stable alkene is generally the major productarrow_forwardWhat is the structure of cis-jasmone, a natural product isolated from jasmine owers, formed by treatment of alkyne A with H2 in the presence of the Lindlar catalyst?arrow_forwardOne of the products of petroleum refinery is naphtha where, benzene could beobtained via catalytic reforming of naphtha. The obtained benzene can potentiallyto react with Lewis acid to form new carbon-carbon bond. Propose the startingmaterial and stepwise mechanism to produce new chemical structure which consista formula molecule of C11H16.arrow_forward
- E2 elimination takes place under the same conditions as SN2 substitution and the reactions compete with each other. Which of the following statements is true? a) E2 elimination and SN2 substitution proceed through the same intermediate step b) E2 elimination is only possible for compounds that react with the SN2 mechanism c) In competition, a strong base favors a substitution reaction d) Steric hindrance favors E2 eliminationarrow_forwardCompound P (C2H4) which is an alkene undergoes reaction with HCl to produce compound Q (C2H5Cl). Reaction of compound Q with benzene in the presence of AlCl3 as catalyst produces compound R. Then, nitration of compound R in the presence ofnH2SO4 produces two compounds, S and T. But when compound R is reacted with a hot acidified solution of alkaline KMnO4 gives compound U. Deduce the structure of compounds P to U.arrow_forwardA hydrocarbon (X), with the molecular formula: C8H14 is reduced in presence of sodium and liquid ammonia to give the only product (Y) with the molecular formula: C8H16. Compounds X and Y both resulting 2,5-dimethylhexane when treated with hydrogen and platinum catalyst (H2/Pt). As a result of the oxidative cleavage of compound Y (by using KMnO4 / H2SO4), a single carboxylic acid derivative with C4H8O2 molecular formula is formed. Again, as a result of the reaction of Y with perbenzoic acid, the chiral compound C8H14O is observed, but the reaction of compound Y with bromine gives the achiral C8H14Br2 as the product.arrow_forward
- two positions of anthracene sometimes react more like polyenes thanlike aromatic compounds.(a) Draw a Kekulé structure that shows how the reactive positions of anthracene are the ends ofa diene, appropriate for a Diels–Alder reaction.(b) The Diels–Alder reaction of anthracene with maleic anhydride is a common organic labexperiment. Predict the product of this Diels–Alder reaction.arrow_forwardTwo isomers, A and B, of molecular formula C5H8 undergo catalytic hydrogenation with hydrogen gas and palladium on carbon to form the same C5H10 product. On ozonolysis followed by treatment with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), isomer A gave a product of molecular formula C5H8O4 that has two carboxylic acid groups in it whereas isomer B gave a product of molecular formula C5H8O3 that contains a carboxylic acid group and a ketone group. Which of the following isomeric pairs best match this data?arrow_forwardTwo isomers, A and B, of molecular formula C5H8 undergo catalytic hydrogenation with hydrogen gas and palladium on carbon to form the same C5H10 product. - Write down the reduction reaction of each molecule using appropriate reagents, listing the following compounds according to their ease of reduction.arrow_forward-Ocimene is a pleasant-smelling hydrocarbon found in the leaves of certain herbs. It has the molecular formula C10H16 and a UV absorption maximum at 232 nm. On hydrogenation with a palladium catalyst, 2,6-dimethyloctane is obtained. Ozonolysis of -ocimene, followed by treatment with zinc and acetic acid, produces the following four fragments: (a) How many double bonds does -ocimene have? (b) Is -ocimene conjugated or nonconjugated? (c) Propose a structure for -ocimene.
