Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The product formed in the given reaction is to be predicted, and the reason for the formation of this product is to be explained.
Concept Introduction:
Aryl halides undergo nucleophilic substitution reactions in the presence of strong base,
Activating groups like alkyl groups gives substitution at the ortho and para position. Because they increase the electron densities at the ortho and para due to the delocalization of pi electrons of benzene ring. Ortho and para sites of the benzene ring is highly electron rich and thus electrophile usually attacks on these sites.

- What is the major monosubstitution product from the Friedel—Crafts reaction of benzene with 1 -chloro-2-methylpropane in the presence of AlCl3?arrow_forwardAlkylation of benzene with 1-chlorobutane in the presence of AlCl3 gave not only the expected butylbenzene product but also, as a major product, (1-methylpropyl)benzene. Write an equation for the reaction Propose a mechanism to account for the formation of butylbenzene Propose a mechanism to account for the formation of (1-methylpropyl)benzenearrow_forwardIn the following sequence of reactions which products are identified correctly? Compound A (C 7H 11B1) is treated with magnesium in ether to give B (C 7H 11MgBr), which reacts violently with D 20 to give 1-methylcyclohexene B with acetone (CH 3COCH 3) followed by hydrolysis gives D (C 10H 180). Heating D with with a deuterium atom on the methyl group C. Reaction concentrated H 2SO 4 gives E (C 10H 16), which decolorizes two equivalents of Br 2 to give F (C 10H 16Br 2). E undergoes hydrogenation with excess H 2 and a Pt catalyst to give isobutylcyclohexane. O The correct structure of C is OH O The correct structure of D is O The correct structure of C is Br OI The correct structure of F is 8rarrow_forward
- The reaction of Compound X and PCC yielded an aldehyde as the product. What is the identity of CompoundX: cyclohexanol or 1-pentanol?arrow_forwardBecause bromocyclohexane is a secondary alkyl halide, both cyclohexanol and cyclohexene are formed when the alkyl halide reacts with hydroxide ion. Suggest a method to synthesize cyclohexanol from bromocyclohexane that forms little or no cyclohexene.arrow_forwardElimination of HBr from 2-bromobutane affords a mixture of 1-butene and 2-butene. With sodium ethoxide as base, 2-butene constitutes 81% of the alkene products, but with potassium tert-butoxide, 2-butene constitutes only 67% of the alkene products. Offer an explanation for this difference.arrow_forward
- Structure of product C A hydrocarbon, A, with formula C11H16 undergoes hydrogenation with Pd to give product B, C11H22, and with Lindlar's catalyst to give product C, C11 H18. Ozonolysis leads to a mixture of products including cyclohexanone and 4-oxobutanoic acid. Treatment with sodium amide (NaNH2) followed by bromoethane gives compound D, C13H20. Draw possible structures for A, B, C, and D. H₂, Lindlar's Problem 13 of 14 Structure of A 1. NaNH2 Submit 2. CH3CH₂Br Structure of product Darrow_forwardAn unknown hydrocarbon A with the formula C6H10 reacts with 1 molar equivalent of H2 over a palladium catalyst to give B C6H12 (Rxn 1). Hydrocarbon A also reacts with OsO4 to give the glycol C (Rxn 2). A gives 5-oxohexanal on ozonolysis (Rxn 3). Draw the structures of A, B, and C. Give the reactions.arrow_forwardDraw the structure of (2Z, 6E)-3-ethyl-7-methyldeca-2, 6-dien-1-ol, the sex pheromone of the codling moth, a common agricultural pest that destroys apple crops. By spraying an apple orchard with this pheromone, the mating of male and female moths is disrupted, and moth populations can be controlled.arrow_forward
- Reaction of this bicycloalkene with bromine in carbon tetrachloride gives a trans dibro- mide. In both (a) and (b), the bromine atoms are trans to each other. However, only one of these products is formed. CH3 CH3 CH3 Br Br CH,Cl, + Br2 or Br Br (a) (b) Which trans dibromide is formed? How do you account for the fact that it is formed to the exclusion of the other trans dibromide?arrow_forward3) Optically active alkyl bromide A (CÂH₁7Br) reactions with potassium tert-butoxide in tert- butanol to yield compound B (CH₁6). Compound B affords the carbonyl compound shown below and formaldehyde when subjected to ozonolysis followed by a reductive workup. Write the reactions and draw the structures of A & B. شدarrow_forwardTreatment of cis-4-bromocyclohexanol with HO– affords compound A and cyclohex-3-en-1-ol. Treatment of trans-4- bromocyclohexanol under the same conditions forms compound B and cyclohex-3-en-1-ol. A and B contain different functional groups and are not isomers of each other.
