Concept explainers
Carbon monoxide replaces oxygen in oxygenated hemoglobin according to the reaction:
a. Use the reactions and associated equilibrium constants at body temperature to find the equilibrium constant for the reaction just shown.
b. Suppose that an air mixture becomes polluted with carbon monoxide at a level of 0.10%. Assuming the air contains 20.0% oxygen and that the oxygen and carbon monoxide ratios that dissolve in the blood are identical to the ratios in the air, what is the ratio of HbCO to HbO2 in the bloodstream? Comment on the toxicity of carbon monoxide.

I2(aq) + I−(aq) ⇌ I3−(aq)If a solution with the concentrations of I2 and I− both equal to 1.000 × 10−3 M before reaction gives an equilibrium concentration of I2 of 6.61 × 10−4 M, what is the equilibrium constant for the reaction?arrow_forwardAqueous Ammonia Solution (with phenolphthalein) NH3 (aq) + H2O (l) = NH4+1 (aq) + OH-1 (aq) What happens to equilibrium by adding HCl to the solution? The weak acid ionizes as follows: HClO (aq) ⇄ H+ (aq) + ClO‒ (aq) Ka=3.0 x 10 ‒8 As strong oxidizing agents, both acid and its conjugate base kill bacteria. However, too high [HClO] is irritating to swimmers’ eyes and too high [ClO‒] will cause the ions to decompose in sunlight. The recommended pH to circumvent both problems is 7.8. Determine the ratio of the weak acid and its conjugate base at this pH.arrow_forward
