Concept explainers
A plumber conies to your ancient apartment building where you have a part-time job as caretaker. He’s checking the hot-water heating system, and notes that the water pressure in the basement is 18 psi. He asks, “How high is the building?” “Three stories, each about 11 feet,” you reply. “OK, about 33 feet,” he says, pausing to do some calculations in his head. “The pressure is fine,” he declares. On what basis did he come to that conclusion?

- How tall must be to measure blood pressure as high as 300 mm Hg?arrow_forwardA horizontal pipe 10.0 cm in diameter has a smooth reduction to a pipe 5.00 cm in diameter. If the pressure of the water in the larger pipe is 8.00 104 Pa and the pressure in the smaller pipe is 6.00 104 Pa, at what rate does water flow through the pipes?arrow_forwardA spherical submersible 2.00 m in radius, armed with multiple cameras, descends under water in a region of the Atlantic Ocean known for shipwrecks and finds its first shipwreck at a depth of 1.75 103 m. Seawater has density 1.03 103 kg/m3, and the air pressure at the oceans surface is 1.013 105 Pa. a. What is the absolute pressure at the depth of the shipwreck? b. What is the buoyant force on the submersible at the depth of the shipwreck?arrow_forward
- How tall must a water-filled manometer be to measure blood pressures as high as 300 mm Hg?arrow_forwardThe left ventricle of a resting adult's heart pumps blood at a flow rate of 83.0 cm3/s , increasing its pressure by 110 mm Hg, its speed from zero to 30.0 cm/s, and its height by 5.00 cm. (All cumbers are averaged over the entire heartbeat) Calculate the total power output of left ventricle. Note that most of the power is used to increase blood pressure.arrow_forwardConsidering the magnitude of typical arterial blood pressures, why are mercury rather than water manometers used for these measurements?arrow_forward
- A manometer is shown in Figure P15.36. Rank the pressures at the five locations indicated from highest to lowest. Indicate equal pressures, if any. FIGURE P15.36arrow_forwardTwo thin-walled drinking glasses having equal base areas but different shapes, with very different cross-sectional areas above the base, are filled to the same level with water. According to the expression P = P0 + gh, the pressure is the same at the bottom of both glasses. In view of this equality, why does one weigh more than the other?arrow_forward
