The humans and chimpanzees shared a common ancestor about 6 million years ago. They diverged from their common ancestors to evolve parallel to each other. The humans differ considerably from chimpanzees in both appearance and cognitive ability. The comparison of genome sequences of both humans and chimpanzees can tell us what genomic changes lead to the evolution of modern humans.
