A chemical substance that gives hydrogen ions when dissolved in water is called as acid. A chemical substance that gives hydroxide ions in solution is called as base.
According to Arrhenius's and Bronsted's definitions, acids and bases can be defined in two ways
According to Arrhenius, the dissociation products which are formed in water describes it is an acid or base. The substances that produce hydrogen ions in water are called acids. The substances that produce hydroxide ions in water are called bases.
A substance that produces more of hydrogen ions will be a strong acid. Similarly a substance that produces more of hydroxide ions will be a strong base.
