Formula used:

It is given that total charge of two point charges is positive, so both charges must be positive. As electrostatic force between them is repulsive, so both charges must be of same sign. Let Q be the total charge of two point charges. Then if one charge is of magnitude q then other charge must be of magnitude (Qq)

The coulomb's expression for electrostatic force between the charges is given by,

  F=kq(Qq)r2

Here, k is electrostatic constant (8.988×109Nm2/C2),r is distance between the point charges.

Calculation:

On re-arrange this equation,

  q2Qq+Fr2k=0

Compare this equation with general quadratic equation,

  ax2+bx+c=0

The roots of this equation,

  x=b±b24ac2a

The values resembles to, x=q;a=1;b=Q;c=Fr2k

Thus, roots of the quadratic equation: q2Qq+Fr2k=0

  q=Q±Q24Fr2k2

Conversion of units of charge from micro coulomb's to coulomb's as,
