Chapter 16, Problem 1Q
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The compound among polyethylene, menthol, and benzoic acid that is most amenable to sublimation should be determined.

Concept introduction:

Sublimation is a technique in which a solid substance does not melt at an atmospheric process instead of directly undergo change into the gaseous state. Sublimation is used as a purification method for the organic compounds as follows:

  • Vaporize without melting.
  • Vaporize without decomposition.
  • Vapor could be condensed back to solid.

For sublimation to occur successfully, a solid should have a high enough vapor pressure than usual so that it should have a weak intermolecular force.

Explanation of Solution

Benzoic acid is a liquid at room temperature so it can be easily purified using the recrystallization method. Polyethylene and menthol both are solids at room temperature so they will have a high melting point at room temperature and substantial vapor pressure too so both is suitable to purification by sublimation.

Menthol due to its characteristic odor can be easily detected on sublimation.
