Chapter 16, Problem 1RQ
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The importance of photosynthesis in plants and animals should be explained.

Concept Introduction: The process of photosynthesis is used by plants to convert light energy into chemical energy. The process of photosynthesis in plants involves capturing of the light energy which converts the reactants (water, carbon dioxide and minerals) into the organic compounds along with oxygen as a by-product. The overall process can be given in the form of a simple reaction although it involves a complex process-

6CO2+ 6H2 C6H12O6+ 6O2

The process begins with the absorption of light energy by the reaction centres which contains chlorophyll pigments. The food prepared by plants is taken by animals to fulfil their need of nutrients.

Answer to Problem 1RQ

Solution: Photosynthesis helps to produce and maintain the oxygen content of the earth’s atmosphere. It provides most of the energy that is necessary to sustain life on the Earth. The process makes it possible for herbivores and omnivores to feed on the autotrophs which are the ultimate energy source for life on the earth.

Explanation of Solution

The requirement of food for humans and other organisms is directly or indirectly fulfilled by photosynthesis. The by-product of photosynthesis is oxygen which is used for respiration. The life on the earth would be impossible without the process of photosynthesis. The only organisms that would exist without this process would be the chemosynthetic bacteria. The process is also responsible for the fossil fuels which were created because of the energy produced by photosynthesis millions of years ago.

Conclusion

Photosynthesis is one of the most important process that helps to sustain life on the earth.
