Interpretation:
Balanced equation for the conversion of glucose to lactate should be written.
Concept introduction:
The reactions for those the numbers of atoms of each element in the reactant and in the product side are equal. Such reactions are said to be a balanced chemical equation.
Answer to Problem 23P
Explanation of Solution
During glycolysis, two molecules of pyruvate are formed. The reaction is as follows:
When muscles undergo intense exercise, then due to lack of oxygen, pyruvate is converted to lactic acid. This process is termed as lactic acid fermentation. The reaction is as follows:
Adding equation 1 and 2, we get,
So, this is the balanced conversion of glucose into lactic acid.
Interpretation:
The standard free-energy change for the conversion of glucose into lactate.
Concept introduction:
Glycolysis is the process that occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell. It is the breakdown of one molecule of glucose into two molecules of pyruvic acid. During this process energy is released in the form of two moles of ATP. The purpose of glycolysis is to maintain the blood glucose level.

- Efficiency of ATP Production in Muscle: The transformation of glucose to lactate in myocytes releases only about 7% of the free energy released when glucose is completely oxidized to CO2 and H2O. Does this mean that anaerobic glycolysis in muscle is a wasteful use of glucose? Explain.arrow_forwardRecall that phosphonacetyl L - aspartate (PALA) is a potent inhibitor of ATCase because it mimics the two physiological substrates. However, in the presence of substrates, low concentrations of this unreactive bisubstrate analog increase the reaction velocity. On the addition of PALA, the reaction rate increases until an average of three molecules of PALA are bound per molecule of enzyme. This maximal velocity is 17-fold greater than it is in the absence of PALA. The reaction rate then decreases to nearly zero on the addition of three more molecules of PALA per molecule of enzyme. Why do low concentrations of PALA activate ATCase?arrow_forwardATP yield. Each of the following molecules is processed by glycolysis to lactate.
