Making outsourcing decisions
Priscilla Smiley manages a fleet of 250 delivery trucks for Daniels Corporation. Smiley must decide whether the company should outsource the fleet management function. If she outsources to Fleet Management Services (FMS), FMS will be responsible for maintenance and scheduling activities. This alternative would require Smiley to lay off her five employees. However, her own job would be secure; she would be Daniels’s liaison with FMS. If she continues to manage the fleet, she will need fleet-management software that costs $9,500 per year to lease. FMS offers to manage this fleet for an annual fee of $300,000. Smiley performed the following analysis:

Which alternative will maximize Daniels’s short-term operating income?
What qualitative factors should Daniels consider before making a final decision?
ABC Company is introducing a new product. The managers are trying to decide whether to make one of its components or to buy it from an outside supplier. The space that could be used to make the part has no alternative use. The outside supplier will sell the part to ABC for P800 per unit. Following is an estimate of per-unit costs if ABC makes the part: Materials P225 ; Direct labor P250 ; Variable manufacturing overhead P225 ; Fixed manufacturing overhead P325. Fixed manufacturing overhead consists of depreciation on machinery and a share of the costs of the factory based on the floor space that manufacturing the part would occupy. Determine whether ABC should make or buy the part. Also you have to indicate the amount favoring the better alternative.

Roscoe Construction Company (RCC) is a company specializing in building roads and highways. As a part of its business, it receives supplies of aggregate from two suppliers: Toorak Gravel (TG) and Kilda Corporation (KC). RCC purchasing has expressed a preference for KC based on price, but occasionally has to order from TG when KC cannot fill the order.
RCC has recently had problems with the quality and the timeliness of deliveries. When a sup plier delivers a load to RCC, it goes through an initial inspection to assure it meets specification. If the load fails the initial inspection, it goes through a secondary inspection to determine the exact issue. Almost always, the issue can be resolved and the load can be used. The initial inspection costs $1,000 per load. A secondary inspection, which is more thorough, costs $5,000 per load. If a delivery is delayed, RCC has to hire temporary workers or pay overtime to some employees. The average cost of a delayed load is $2,000.

If the company accepts this offer and shuts down production of this part of the business, production workers and supervisors will be reassigned to other areas. Assume that for the short-term decision-making process demonstrated in this problem, the companys total labor costs (direct labor and supervisor salaries) will remain the same if the bar inserts are purchased. Galveston Pump Corporation is considering implementing a JIT production system. The new system would reduce current average inventory levels of $2,000,000 by 75%, but it would require a much greater dependency on the company’s core suppliers for on-time deliveries and high-quality inputs. The company’s operations manager, Frank Griswold, is opposed to the idea of a new JIT system because he is concerned that the new system (a) will be too costly to manage; (b) will result in too many stockouts; and (c) will lead to the layoff of his employees, several of whom are currently managing inventory. He believes that these layoffs will affect the morale of his entire production department. The management accountant, Bonnie Barrett, is in favor of the new system because of its likely cost savings. Frank wants Bonnie to rework the numbers because he is concerned that top management will give more weight to nancial factors and not give due…arrow_forward
- Ethics in Action TAC Industries Inc. sells heavy equipment to large corporations and federal, state, and local governments. Corporate sales are the result of a competitive bidding process, where TAC competes against other companies based on selling price. Sales to the government, however, are determined on a cost plus basis, where the selling price is determined by adding a fixed markup percentage to the total job cost. Tandy Lane is the cost accountant for the Equipment Division of TAC Industries Inc. The division is under pressure from senior management to improve income from operations. As Tandy reviewed the division's job cost sheets, she realized that she could increase the division's income from operations by moving a portion of the direct labor hours that had been assigned to the job order cost sheets of corporate customers onto the job order costs sheets of government customers. She believed that this would create a “win–win” for the division by (1) reducing the cost of…arrow_forwardAsbury Coffee Enterprises (ACE) manufactures two models of coffee grinders: Personal and Commercial.
