Chapter 16, Problem 5TYR
Summary Introduction
Introduction:
The sympathic division is often named as division of the thoracolumbar as it originates from the spinal cord's thoracic and lumbar areas. It has fairly short preanglionic fibers and long postganglionic fibers. Preganglionic neurosomes are the spinal cord's gray matter in the lateral horns and nearby regions.

In the sympathetic division of the autonomic system:
preganglionic neurons originate in the thoracolumbar segments of the cord
the preganglionic neurons are unmyelinated
the preganglionic neurons are long
the neurotransmitter released by the preganglionic neurons is norepinephrine
Once a sympathetic preganglionic axon reaches a paravertebral ganglion, it can: ascend or descend
the sympathetic trunk, to synapse in another paravertebral ganglion.
