Chapter 16, Problem 63PS

Teachers’ Retirement System of the City of New York offers several types of investments for its member. Among the choice are investments with fixed and variables rates of return. There are several categories of variable-return investments. The Diversified Equity Fund consists of investments that are primarily made in stocks, and the Stable-Value Fund consists of investments in corporate bonds and other types of lower-risk instruments. The data in TRSNYC represent the value of a unit of each type of variable-return investments at the beginning of each year from 1984 to 2017.

a. plot the data.

b. compute the linear trend forecasting equation.

c. compute the quadratic trend forecasting equation.

d. compute the exponential trend forecasting equation.

e. determine the best-fitting autoregressive model, using α = 0.05.

f. Perform a residual analysis for each of the model in (b) through (e).

g. compute the standard error of the estimate ( S YX ) and the MAD for each corresponding model in (f).

h. On the basis of your results in (f) and (g), along with a consideration of the principle of parsimony, which model would you select for purposes of forecasting? Discuss.

i. Using the selected model in (h), forecast the until values for 2018.

j. Based on the result of (a) through (i) what investment strategy would you recommend for a member of the Teachers’ Retirement System of the city of New York? Explain.

First Securities, Inc., an investment firm, has $380,000 on account. The chief investment officer would like to reinvest the $380,000 in a portfolio that would maximize return on investment while at the same time maintaining a relatively conservative mix of stocks and bonds. The following table shows the investment opportunities and rates of return.   Investment Opportunity   Rate of Return     Municipal Bonds (X1) 0.095   High Tech Stock (X2) 0.146   Blue Chip Stock (X3) 0.075   Federal Bonds (X4) 0.070                                               a) The Board of Directors has mandated that at least 60 percent of the investment consist of a combination of municipal and federal bonds, at least 25 percent Blue Chip Stock, no more than 30 percent High Tech and Blue Chip Stock, and no more than 15 percent High Tech Stock.   Based on above problem, how many constraints are in this problem?   A) 3 B) 4 C) 5 D) 2   b) Based on part a, which of the…
In a two-way data table, you can compare how different values of one input variable influence the return on invested capital by holding the remaining input variables constant. True or False True False
State University has increased its tuition for in-state and out-of-state students in each of the past 5 years to offset cuts in its budget allocation from the state legislature. The university administration always thought that the number of applications received was independent of tuition; however, drops in applications and enrollments the past 2 years have proved this theory to be wrong. University admissions officials have developed the following relationships between the number of applicants who accept admission and enter State and the cost of tuition per semester (in-state) (out-of-state) The university would like to develop a planning model that will indicate the in-state and out-of-state tuitions, as well as the number of students that could be expected to enroll in the freshman class. The university doesn’t have enough classroom space for more than 1,400 freshmen, and it needs at least 700 freshmen to meet all its class-size x2 = 35,000 - 6t2 x1 = 21,000 - 12t1 (xi) (ti):…
