Chapter 16, Problem 7CRCAQ
Summary Introduction

To review:

The effect of a tumor present in the pituitary gland or hypothalamus that has led to the compression of the optic chiasma on vision.

Introduction:

Vision is known as one of the dominant senses. The receptors that are involved in visualization are referred to as photoreceptors and are present in the retinal layer of the eye. The photoreceptor cells sense and further encode the light patterns that tend to enter the eyes. Rods and cones are two forms of photoreceptor cells. The rod cells provide vision in low light intensity while the cone cells provide color visions as they provide vision in bright light.

Describe the effect on vision of a tumor in the hypothalamus or pituitary gland that compresses the optic chiasma, destroying the axons crossing through this structure.
What happens at the optic chiasma? What is the consequence of this?
a) Based upon how the neural membrane functions, briefly explain how electrical stimulation can cause a neuron to generate an action potential. Describe in one sentence a type of action potential that can be generated by electrical stimulation, but that cannot be generated by synaptic inputs. b) The central part of the retina consists largely of cones, which are responsible for colour vision in normal sight. However, presently available retinal prostheses are not able to reliably provide a perception of colour for people implanted with these devices. Explain why people with a retinal prosthesis are currently unable to reliably perceive colour.
