Chapter 16, Problem 83PP
Fiberglass is a popular, economical, and fairly effective building insulation. It consists of fine glass fibers—often including recycled glass—formed loosely into rectangular slabs or rolled into blankets (Fig. 16.18). One side is often faced with heavy paper or aluminum foil. Fiberglass insulation comes in thicknesses compatible with common building materials—for example, 3.5 inch and 6 inch for wood-framed walls. Standard 6-inch fiberglass has an R-factor of 19.

If its surface area is 1.25m^2, what is the net rate of heat loss from his body by radiation considering that the surrounding temperature is 20 degrees Celsius? Note: the emissivity of the body is very close to unity, irrespective of skin pigmentation. If solar radiation is incident on the spacecraft at a rate of 1000W/m2, determine the surface temperature of the spacecraft when the radiation emitted equals the solar energy absorbed.arrow_forwardWhat is the rate of heat transfer by radiation, with an unclothed person standing in a dark room whose ambient temperature is 22.0C. - During a plant visit, it was noticed that a 12-m-long section of a 10-cm-diameter steam pipe is completely exposed to the ambient air. The temperature measurements indicate that the average temperature of the outer surface of the steam pipe is 75°C when the ambient temperature is 5°C. There are also light winds in the area at 10 km/h. The emissivity of the outer surface of the pipe is 0.8, and the average temperature of the surfaces surrounding the pipe, including the sky, is estimated to be 0°C. Determine the amount of heat lost from the steam during a 10-h-long work day. Steam is supplied by a gas-fired steam generator that has an efficiency of 80 percent, and the plant pays $1.05/therm of natural gas. If the pipe is insulated and 90 percent of the heat loss is saved, determine the amount of money this facility will save a year as a result of insulating the steam pipes. Assume the plant operates every day of the year for 10 h. State your assumptions.arrow_forwardConsider a 6-in * 8-in epoxy glass laminate (k = 0.10 Btu/h·ft·°F) whose thickness is 0.05 in. In order to reduce the thermal resistance across its thickness, cylindrical copper fillings (k = 223 Btu/h·ft·°F) of 0.02 in diameter are to be planted throughout the board, with a center-to-center distance of 0.06 in. Determine the new value of the thermal resistance of the epoxy board for heat conduction across its thickness as a result of this modification.arrow_forwardOne easy way to reduce heating (and cooling) costs is to add extra insulation in the attic of a house. Suppose a single-story cubical house already had 15 cm of fiberglass insulation in the attic and in all the exterior surfaces. If you added an extra 8.0 cm of fiberglass to the attic, by what percentage would the heating cost of the house drop? Take the house to have dimensions 10 m by 15 m by 3.0m. Ignore air infiltration and heat loss through windowsand doors, and assume that the interior is uniformly at one temperature and the exterior is uniformly at another.arrow_forward

This combination is popular because it is strong, inexpensive and easy to construct, and, most importantly, because steel and concrete have very similar coefficients of linear expansion, about 1.1×10−5 ( ◦C)−1 . The llocations highest recorded temperature is 38.3◦C. Its lowest recorded temperature is -23.3◦C 1 (a) How much will the length of the bridge change between the highest and lowest temperatures? (b) The bridge is not a single piece of concrete, but rather is made of many slabs supported by a steel structure. Why do you think that is?
