Fiberglass is a popular, economical, and fairly effective building insulation. It consists of fine glass fibers—often including recycled glass—formed loosely into rectangular slabs or rolled into blankets (Fig. 16.18). One side is often faced with heavy paper or aluminum foil. Fiberglass insulation comes in thicknesses compatible with common building materials—for example, 3.5 inch and 6 inch for wood-framed walls. Standard 6-inch fiberglass has an R-factor of 19.
One purpose of foil facing on fiberglass insulation is to reduce heat loss by
- a.

- The average coefficient of linear expansion of copper is 17 106 (C)1. The Statue of Liberty is 93 in tall on a summer morning when the temperature is 25C. Assume the copper plates covering the statue are mounted edge to edge without expansion joints and do not buckle or bind on the framework supporting them as the day grows hot. What is the order of magnitude of the statues increase in height? - During a plant visit, it was noticed that a 12-m-long section of a 10-cm-diameter steam pipe is completely exposed to the ambient air. The temperature measurements indicate that the average temperature of the outer surface of the steam pipe is 75°C when the ambient temperature is 5°C. There are also light winds in the area at 10 km/h. The emissivity of the outer surface of the pipe is 0.8, and the average temperature of the surfaces surrounding the pipe, including the sky, is estimated to be 0°C. Determine the amount of heat lost from the steam during a 10-h-long work day. Steam is supplied by a gas-fired steam generator that has an efficiency of 80 percent, and the plant pays $1.05/therm of natural gas. If the pipe is insulated and 90 percent of the heat loss is saved, determine the amount of money this facility will save a year as a result of insulating the steam pipes. Assume the plant operates every day of the year for 10 h. State your assumptions.arrow_forwardConsider a 6-in * 8-in epoxy glass laminate (k = 0.10 Btu/h·ft·°F) whose thickness is 0.05 in. In order to reduce the thermal resistance across its thickness, cylindrical copper fillings (k = 223 Btu/h·ft·°F) of 0.02 in diameter are to be planted throughout the board, with a center-to-center distance of 0.06 in. Determine the new value of the thermal resistance of the epoxy board for heat conduction across its thickness as a result of this modification.arrow_forwardthe surface area of a picnic cooler is 2.10 m^2 and it has walls constructed of a material 1.50 cm thick that has a thermal conductivity of 2.00 X 10^-2 W/(m x degrees celsius). - An electric kitchen range has a total wall area of 1.40 m2 and is insulated with a layer of fiberglass 4.0 cm thick. The inside surface of the fiberglass has a temperature of 175 degrees C and its outside surface is at 35 degrees C. The fiberglass has a thermal conductivity of 0.040 W/(m*K). What electric-power input to the heating element is required to maintain this temperature?arrow_forwardOn New Year’s Day, several human “polar bears” prepare for their annual dip into the icy waters of Narragansett Bay.One of these hardy souls has a surface area of 1.15 m2 and a surface temperature of 303 K 1∙30 °C2. Find the net radiated power from this person (a) in a dressing room, where the temperature is 293 K 1∙20 °C2, and (b) outside, where thetemperature is 273 K 1∙0 °C2. Yes or No (b) What if the aluminum rod were 10.05 cm in diameter? ?°CIs that temperature attainable? Yes or Noarrow_forwardA bridge has a span of 556.7 feet and, like many modern structures, it is made of concrete reinforced with steel rebar. This combination is popular because it is strong, inexpensive and easy to construct, and, most importantly, because steel and concrete have very similar coefficients of linear expansion, about 1.1×10−5 ( ◦C)−1 . The llocations highest recorded temperature is 38.3◦C. Its lowest recorded temperature is -23.3◦C 1 (a) How much will the length of the bridge change between the highest and lowest temperatures? (b) The bridge is not a single piece of concrete, but rather is made of many slabs supported by a steel structure. Why do you think that is?
