The reason for phenol being a stronger acid than methanol in terms of their conjugate base structures is to be explained.
Concept introduction:
Acids are species that donate their protons to form a conjugate base and increases the hydronium ion concentration in an aqueous solution.
The stronger the acid is, the more stable is its conjugate base. Weak acids have relatively unstable conjugate base and can recombine with a proton to form acids.
Resonance is the phenomenon of delocalization of electrons in certain molecules or in polyatomic ions. It provides extra stability to the molecule or the ion.
More the number of resonating structures more will be the stability of compound.
