Answer to Problem 98P

The x and y components of electric field at a point P is 2.89×105N/C_ and 2.77×106N/C_ respectively.

Explanation of Solution

Write the expression to find the electric field on the x axis.

Ex=E1x+E2x (I)

Here, E1x is the electric field along x axis due to charge 1 and E2x is the electric field along x axis due to charge 2.

Write the expression to find the electric field on the y axis.

Ey=E1y+E2y (II)

Here, E1y is the electric field along y axis due to charge 1 and E2y is the electric field along y axis due to charge 2.

The following figures shows the sketch and the triangular components of the electric field at point P.

Conclusion:

Substitute 0 for E1x and kq2a2+b2(aa2+b2) for E2x in equation (I).

Ex=0+kq2a2+b2(aa2+b2)=kq2a(a2+b2)3/2

Here, k is a constant, q2 is the second charge, a is the distance between two charges and b is the distance between point P and first charge.

Substitute 8.988×109Nm2/C2 for k, 47.0×109C for q2, 0.0340m for a and 0.0140m for b in the above equation.

Ex=(8.988×109Nm2/C2)(47.0×109C)(0.0340m)((0.0340m)2+(0.0140m)2)3/2=2.89×105N/C

Substitute kq1b2 for E1y and kq2a2+b2(ba2+b2) for E2y in equation (II).

Ey=kq1b2kq2a2+b2(ba2+b2)=k(q1b2q2b(a2+b2)3/2)

Here, k is a constant, q2 is the second charge, a is the distance between two charges and b is the distance between point P and first charge.

Substitute 8.988×109Nm2/C2 for k, 63.0×109C for q1, 47.0×109C for q2, 0.0340m for a and 0.0140m for b in the above equation.

Ey=(8.988×109Nm2/C2)(63.0×109C(0.0140m)2(47.0×109C)(0.0140m)((0.0340m)2+(0.0140m)2)3/2)=2.77×106N/C

Therefore, the x and y components of electric field at a point P is 2.89×105N/C_ and 2.77×106N/C_ respectively.
