Chapter 16.2, Problem 1P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Isomers of alcohol having a molecular formula C4H10O that can be prepared from the reduction of aldehydes and ketones respectively are to be determined. The isomeric form of the same alcohol that cannot be prepared form the reduction of any carbonyl compound is to be identified.

Concept introduction:

The isomers are associated with the same chemical formula but have different connectivity of atoms.

The aldehyde or ketone on hydrogenation undergoes addition of hydrogen across the carbon-oxygen double bond and forms corresponding alcohol.

Hydrogenation is basically the reduction process. The primary alcohol is obtained after reduction of aldehydes, the ketones on reduction gave secondary alcohol but no carbonyl compound gave tertiary alcohol after the reduction process.
