Introduction:
An activator binds to a specific site on a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) sequence near the promoter or far away from the promoter and initiates transcription. This is positive regulation of the gene transcription. In the case of negative regulation, a repressor protein binds to the promoter and prevents the process of transcription. Bacteriophage λ and HIV show both positive and negative regulation of gene expression.
