Chapter 17, Problem 17.50QP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The value of pH for 0.50M CrCl3 is to be calculated.

Concept introduction: The potential of H+ ions is called as pH. The value of pH is less than 7 for acidic solutions and greater than 7 for basic solutions. For neutral solution the value of pH is 7.

To determine: The value of pH for 0.50M CrCl3.

Answer to Problem 17.50QP

The value of pH for 0.50M CrCl3 is 2.15_.

Explanation of Solution

The concentration of CrCl3 is 0.50M.

The chemical equation for the dissociation of CrCl3 in water is,

CrCl3+H2O[Cr(H2O)6]3+

At equilibrium,

[Cr(H2O)6]3++H2O[Cr(H2O)5OH]2++H3O+

The Ka of CrCl3 is 1.0×104.

The ICE table for the dissociation of Fe(NO3)3 is,

[Cr(H2O)6]3+[Cr(H2O)5OH]2++H3O+I0.5000CxxxE0.50xxx

The concentrations of both [Cr(H2O)5OH]2+ and H3O+ are equal and assumed to be x and is calculated by the equilibrium constant expression,

Ka=[[Cr(H2O)5OH]2+][H3O+][[Cr(H2O)6]3+]

Substitute the values of dissociation constant and concentration of base in the above expression to calculate the concentration of H+ ions.

1×104=x20.50xx2=1×104(0.50x)x2=5×1051×104x0=x2+1×104x5×105

Simplify the above equation by the formula,

x=b±b24ac2a

Substitute the values of a and b in the above formula to calculate the value of x.

x=(1×104)±(1×104)24×1×(5×105)2×1=1×104±1×108+2×1042=1×104+0.01412=7×103M

Hence, the concentration of H3O+ is 7×103M.

The pH of a solution is calculated by the formula,

pH=log[H3O+]

Substitute the value of [H3O+] in the above formula to calculate the value of pH.

pH=log(7×103M)=2.15_

Hence, the pH of a solution is 2.15_.

Conclusion

The pH of a CrCl3 solution is 2.15_
