Introduction:
The promoter regions of DNA consist of cytosine and guanine residues that collectively called as CpG islands. The DNA methylation is the process of addition of methyl groups by the enzyme called as DNA methyltransferase. It is the epigenetic modification that occurs within this island tends to affects the gene expression. Three types of methyltransferase are involved namely DNMT1, DNMT2, DNMT3a, and DNMT3b. The methyl groups of CpG islands projects itself into the major groove of DNA thereby blocks the enzymes that are involved in the transcription process.
