Concept introduction:
The splitting of a heavy nucleus like uranium-235 into two or more lighter nuclei along with the release of tremendous amount of energy is called nuclear fission.
The fission is triggered by a neutron which collides with a uranium-235 to produce two lighter nuclei and three neutrons along with a tremendous release of energy. These three neutrons can initiate the fission of three other uranium atoms. Thus, a self-amplifying chain reaction can be initiated in the fission of uranium.
